2022 Volkswagen ID 5 Review

2022 Volkswagen ID 5 Review

The Volkswagen ID lineup is the company's rapidly expanding range of all-electric vehicles, based on the compact crossover design, and delivering the latest in EV technology. The ID.4 was launched a matter of months ago and received a slew of great reviews, but Volkswagen has surprised the auto press by already developing a new variation on the theme. Known as the ID.5, it's yet to be fully confirmed, but the details that have so far emerged suggest that it could be a highly desirable update on the existing model. What will the main 2022 Volkswagen ID.5 features comprise? Read our review to find out.

Exterior and Styling

So far, only heavily veiled teaser shots of the ID.5 exterior have been released, but from first impressions the bodywork adds a distinctly sporty edge to the ID.4's more typical crossover shape. Indeed, the German promotional material describes the ID.5 as a "next-generation SUV coupe", but this marketing might not fully translate to the North American market.

Nonetheless, the curved roof leading to the spoiler-equipped rear hatch adds a sleekness to the profile that definitely ups the style ante compared to the ID.5's stablemates. What's more, the relatively short and high hood adds an aggressive edge to the front end and makes a refreshing change from the typical SUV profile.

Key 2022 Volkswagen ID.5 Features: Under the Hood

The ID.5 will be built on the same production lines as the existing ID.3 and ID.4 models, and is likely to include very similar engineering. Taking a cue from its ID.4 sibling, the ID.5 is said to feature a single electric motor backed by an 82kWh battery as the starting point of the range, delivering a useful 201 horsepower to rear-wheel drive as standard. However, all-wheel drive is also likely to be available, with a second motor pushing the combined output to a satisfying 302 horsepower.

But the EV powertrain is about more than high output. The hefty battery not only creates a low centre of gravity for excellent handling that hugs the pavement, but it also provides enough juice for an estimated 540km of range

Interior and Technology

The ID.5's interior is expected to be centred around a digital instrument cluster nestled behind the steering wheel, although whether the size increases from the ID.4's 5.3" isn't yet known. The infotainment functions will be accessed via a 10" or 12" touchscreen display mounted above the centre console, with Volkswagen specifying that the software will be intuitive, advanced, and capable of receiving over-the-air updates to add new features as they become available.

Lastly, the ID.4's sculpted dash and side panels are likely to be carried over to complete the ID.5 interior's futuristic feel.

2022 Volkswagen ID.5 Review: The Verdict

Electric vehicle technology is moving ahead faster than ever before, but with the ID.5 Volkswagen shows that they have no intention of being left behind. With its combination of sporty crossover looks, powerful EV engineering under the hood, and advanced tech in the cabin, the 2022 Volkswagen ID.5 promises to set new standards in the EV crossover market.
