There's no shortage of subcompact crossovers available for Canadian buyers, but an all-new model from Volkswagen looks set to carve out its own unique niche in the market. There are two distinct powertrains available with the 2022 VW Taos. Both are based around a 1.5L turbocharged engine which produces 158 horsepower and 184lb-ft of torque, a substantial output for a crossover in the subcompact segment. However, while the engines may be the same in every model, there are two ways to complete the powertrain.
Choose the front-wheel drive option and you'll receive an eight-speed automatic transmission which has gear ratios tuned to give maximum fuel economy. Alternatively, the all-wheel drive version sports a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission which puts a greater emphasis on performance. Either way, the Taos offers a deceptive amount of power for its subcompact size.
One of the great benefits of the subcompact format is impressive fuel economy, and the Taos offers an excellent example of this quality. The FWD models boast a consumption figure of just 7.6L / 100km combined, while even the sportier AWD models deliver a frugal 8.4L.
The entry-level Taos trim features a 6.5" touchscreen display to access infotainment, but a much more generous 8" unit is supplied in every other model. Extra information is conveyed by a fully digital instrument cluster, sized at either 8" at the lower end or 10.3" on higher trims. All models include the VW App Connect system as standard, and smartphone integration integration is provided by both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
