Volkswagen Jetta Review - What you Need to Know

The new 2020 Volkswagen Jetta Review

Imposing and stylish, the trunk-style Golf returns to its original name: Jetta!

A successful model in the United States and known as Jetta, Vento or Bora, depending on the market and the era, the Golf à malle is back in a graceful style that makes it a very special model. Correctly powered and champion of cargo volume (527 litres), the Jetta clearly has trunk space! Even more than the Passat, to top it all off! In fact, the relationship with the Passat is striking in profile and from the ¾ rear. As for the rear headlights, they're directly modelled on the Jetta's.

In terms of measurements, the Jetta is 35 cm longer than the hatchback and 17.5 cm longer than the previous generation. As for the V-shaped grille, in the style of the GTI, it's dressed in chrome and reinforces the overall elegance. More centimetres, more useful volume, but also more pretensions for this Volkswagen that claims a higher budget than the Golf.

Interior & Technology

Inside, Jetta's interior is well presented, generously equipped right from the start of the range and comfortable: the Jetta knows how to entertain. Cabin space is adequate both front and rear, the interior is identical to that of the Golf, which already satisfies this point.

The dashboard does the same and displays its occasional chic sobriety. And the model's upscale positioning means that it comes standard with a good amount of standard equipment. The air conditioning, cruise control and exterior body protection are all included right from the start.

Performance

The 1.9 TDI powerfully propels the Jetta, with 105 hp proving to be quite sufficient.
This is one of the most successful engines we have ever tested on this model, the 105 hp 1.9 TDI 4-cylinder diesel engine. Already present on the Audi A3, Seat Leon and many other models of the VAG Group, this block shines by its goodwill and low consumption values. Volkswagen thus evokes 5.3 l/100 km in mixed traffic and 6.6 l/100 km in the city. As for us, our city consumption is more like 8 litres. Available and alert, this engine suits the Jetta very well but is nonetheless loud and clear. Soundproofing is not Jetta's strong point, as it struggles to hide the TDI's "oily" intonations.

On the road

The Jetta's handling is healthy and pleasant despite the firm suspension.

With an overweight of nearly 150 kg compared to the Golf, one could have feared parasitic reactions on the road, but that's not the case. The Jetta is comfortable in all circumstances and handles very similarly to the Golf, which it inherits from the Golf's underbody. Comfort is good despite the dry suspension. The latter uses a McPherson front suspension combined with a multi-link rear suspension. This makes it a safe choice for any type of road.

Conclusion

Priced between 800 and 1,600 euros more than an equivalent 5-door Golf, the Jetta is asserting itself and targeting a browner, more affluent clientele than the competition. Starting at 19,230 euros in 1.6,102 hp petrol, it can be upgraded to 105 hp TDI from 21,720 euros. We are now only 1,300 euros away from a Passat, which is less equipped, and from which it could grab a small share of the customer base. At least on the side of the refractory to the increase in its measurements. You might be interested in the new 2021 Jetta.
